As part of the MPI Wholesomeness testing requirements, MIlkTestNZ offers both the Foreign Matter and Senses tests.
Foreign Matter
The Foreign Matter test involves passing a full sample vial through a filter which will retain foreign matter of a particular size. The Foreign Matter test will always require its own clear sample vial (provided by MilkTestNZ).
Senses
The sensory evaluation test involves both a visual inspection of the sample as well as an assessment of the odour of the milk. The sample is heated and any resulting odour is noted. There are a number of grades that can be assigned.
Examples of grades assigned to samples include:
- Cheesy
- Buttery
- Feedy (Onions, Fruity)
- Stale
- Fishy
- Musty
- Chemical
- Sour/Rotten
- Rancid
Grade classifications can depend on the species of milk.
