Composition Testing

Composition testing is carried out to determine the levels of key components in milk. These results are also used for farmer payment purposes.  The test involves heating samples followed by gently mixing to ensure the sample is homogenised.  The sample is then passed through the CombiFOSS instrument.

A number of components can be analysed through the instrument.  Calibrations are maintained for a total of 53 components.

The standard components reported are:

  • Somatic Cell Count
  • Fat
  • Protein
  • Total Solids
  • Freezing Point Estimate
  • Lactose

Additional components are also available for an additional price including:

  • Urea
  • Fee Fatty Acids
  • Casein

Composition testing can also be carried out on sample types such as cream and colostrum using the FT120.

The components requestable include:

  • Fat
  • Protein
  • Total Solids
  • Lactose
  • IgG

All other sample types can be tested using our reference methods.  Reference Testing & Calibration

MilkTestNZ now has the ability to screen milk samples for potential adulteration through the recently launched ASM (Atypical Spectral Monitoring).   Atypical Spectral Monitoring
